An emerging body of research rooted in the field of Metabolic Psychiatry shows us that mental wellbeing and metabolic health are deeply interconnected. When we care for ourselves through taking steps to reduce inflammation, stabilize blood sugar, and nourish our energy, we create a foundation for health in both our bodies and minds: mentabolic health.
People who have lived through crises, trauma, abuse, and simply the mere stress of daily living in an uncertain world often develop an attitude of survival. To survive, to just get by and get through can become their goals for life. Yet in my own life and in my work with others I have come to believe that rather than simply struggling to survive, we are all meant to thrive. Thriving must include a shift from trying to heal our minds (through talk therapy) separately from our bodies (through fitness and food) to an approach that incorporates the entirety of our whole selves.
